Three-Minute Thesis Competition (3MTŪ)

IMOC 2025 — Three-Minute Thesis Competition (3MT®)

The 21st SBMO/IEEE MTT-S International Microwave and Optoelectronics Conference (IMOC 2025) is pleased to announce the first edition of the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition.

In this competition, Ph.D. students will have three minutes or less to present their research using only one static slide — with no animations, transitions, or any other visual aids — to a panel of judges.

Participants will be evaluated based on the clarity, engagement, and persuasive power of their presentation. Any candidate exceeding the time limit will be disqualified.

What is 3MT®

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is an initiative originally developed by the University of Queensland (Australia) that encourages researchers to communicate complex ideas in a clear, concise, and engaging manner.

Now integrated into IMOC 2025, the event offers Ph.D. students the opportunity to present their research in Microwaves and Optoelectronics in an accessible and dynamic format for a broad audience.

The competition aims to develop essential scientific communication skills, enabling participants to express enthusiasm, clarity, and purpose when discussing their research — valuable abilities in any professional career.

Who Can Participate

The IMOC 2025 3MT® Competition is open exclusively to Ph.D. students who are the primary authors of papers accepted for oral or poster presentation at IMOC 2025.

Presentations may be delivered in either English or Portuguese, allowing participants to communicate their research effectively in their preferred language.

All conference attendees are invited to attend the competition and discover how our students can turn technical topics into inspiring and accessible stories.

How to Apply

Registrations must be submitted through the official Google Forms link provided for the Doctoral Presentations Session:

Objectives of 3MT®

The IMOC 2025 3MT® Competition aims to spark enthusiasm and curiosity about the many ways Microwave and Optoelectronic technologies impact our daily lives — from wireless communications and photonic networks to emerging applications such as IoT, radar, and 5G.

By highlighting the real-world impact of scientific research, the competition seeks to inspire new generations of researchers and professionals, showing how these fields help shape a better and more connected world.

Join us in celebrating the power of science to communicate, connect, and transform.

Awards

Prizes will be awarded to the top three participants, selected by a panel of judges.
